Weekend Food Wrap Up

I'm going to stick to this subject for awhile. I guess I'm doing a lot of processing, figuring out where these concepts fit into my lifestyle.

Heard a great story on NPR this evening talking about sustainable agriculture and in particular meat consumption. In conclusion eat less meat, eat higher quality meat that you can feel better about. Food that was raised well and harvested well tastes better.

This weekend we did a lot of grocery shopping. Saturday we hosted a group for dinner so that meant a lot of shopping on Saturday. First stop was the food co-op to get as much as we could at our favorite store. We finished up with a few things we couldn't find as well as getting the beer and wine at Whole Foods. While a much better experience than Trader Joe's we were very ready to get back to the homeland of Logan Square after that trip. We got lunch there which is always a nice treat. I got a piece of veggie pizza which was great. I wish you could pay at the counter though. It's so weird to leave the eating area to pay and then go back to sit and eat. Shopping was OK, it was crowded but I think you just have to expect that on a Saturday in Lincoln Park. Checking out was pretty awful. I'm just not a Lincoln Park Whole Foods person. I don't have kids, I don't need sparkling water and 100 bottle of premade ice tea, and a million prepackaged snacks.

On a VERY positive note the Logan Square Farmers Market opened today. It was bigger than last year and packed. I'm such a snob, I'm happy to see a crowd at the Farmers Market, not so happy at whole foods. Anyhow spring is in full effect and there are wonderful leafy veggies everywhere. I need to learn more about some of the greens I'm less familiar with like mustard greens and chard. I didn't realize how lucky I was to get ahold of some strawberries until I found out my neighbor was too late and didn't get any. Tonight for dinner I had a spinach and strawberry salad. Yum!
